Top seeds Zeel and Niki advance to round two of Fenesta Open 2021

Gujarat’s Zeel Desai, top seed in Women’s singles draw, and the number one seed among Men’s singles, Niki Poonacha got off to winning start to their 2021 Fenesta Open National Championship campaign being held at the RK Khanna Tennis Stadium from 25th to 30th October in New Delhi.

Playing S Ganta in his Round of 32 tie, Poonacha won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 whilst Desai dropped just three games in total en route her 6-1, 6-2 victory over Yubrani Banerjee of West Bengal to reach the Round of 16.

In the Men’s draw, second seed Ishaque Eqbal endured an early exit from the championship at the hands of 2018 National Champion Siddharth Vishwakarma in straight sets 1-6, 3-6.

Among the women, four times National Champion from Delhi and eighth seed in women’s draw this year, Prerna Bhambri, was another notable name who went down in the first round. Bhambri, who won the Fenesta Open four consecutive times from 2012 to 2015, was ousted by qualifier Vanshita Pathania in a three setter 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
