Indian players continue strong showing across ATP & WTA Tours

Indian tennis players continued to make their presence felt across the ATP and WTA Tours this week, with Anirudh Chandrasekar & Yuki Bhambri leading the charge at the ATP 500 Mubadala DC Open, while Niki Poonacha at the ATP 250 Mifel Tennis Open in Mexico and Ankita Raina at the WTA 250 Memphis Classic in United States were also in action at top-level events around the world.

At the ATP 500 Mubadala DC Open in Washington, Anirudh Chandrasekar capitalised on a late opportunity after entering the doubles draw as a lucky loser. Making the most of his second chance, the Indian fought his way into the quarterfinals. Having teamed up with Uruguay’s Ariel Behar, the duo showed tremendous resilience to recover from a set down and registered a thrilling come-from-behind win 3-6, 7-6(2), 10-8  in the doubles Round of 16 at the ATP 500 Mubadala DC Open. They will next face the top seeds Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori from Italy to book a place in the semis of the ATP 500 event, one of the biggest stages outside the Grand Slams and Masters events. 

Meanwhile, Yuki Bhambri and his Kiwi partner Michael Venus saw their ATP 500 Mubadala DC Open campaign come to an end in the Round of 16, falling 3-6, 4-6 to third seeds Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool of Great Britain. Despite the first-round defeat, Bhambri remains one of India’s leading doubles players and will look to bounce back quickly as the North American hard-court swing continues in the lead-up to the US Open.

In Mexico, at the ATP 250 Mifel Tennis Open, Niki Poonacha, along with his Ecuadorian partner Gonzalo Escobar, has also made it to the quarterfinals after an upset win 6-3, 6-4  over top seeded pairing of Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury. Continuing the momentum from his recent run of strong results which includes a runner up finish last week at the ATP 125 Cranbrook Tennis Classic, the Indian doubles specialist Poonacha once again demonstrated his growing consistency at tour level as he looked to build on his impressive 2026 season against a quality international field.

Among Indian women, Ankita Raina also continued India’s representation on the women’s tour. Competing at the WTA 250 Memphis Classic in doubles, Ankita Raina and her Aussie partner Astra Sharma battled their way into the quarterfinals by defeating American twins Ivana Corley and Carmen Corley 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-4 in a hard-fought Round of 16 clash.

The Indo-Australian duo showed tremendous resilience to recover from a set down, edging a tense second-set tie-break before racing through the match tie-break to seal victory. Ankita and Sharma will next face I-Hsuan Cho and Yi-Tsen Cho of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals. 

Indian players were also in action across several ATP Challenger Tour events this week, with multiple singles and doubles campaigns continuing as they look to add valuable ranking points and maintain momentum during the busy summer schedule.
