Foreign players dominate the day at ITF M15 New Delhi

2019 National Champion Poonacha only Indian in the last eight

New Delhi, 1 April 2021: Foreign players dominance was out in full display during the singles Round of 16 of the ITF Men’s $15,000 New Delhi with seven out of eight quarter-finals spots booked by International participants today.

Two Americans Oliver Crawford, fourth seed and winner of last week?s ITF M15 Pune, and qualifier Alexander Kotzen, along with Irish second seed Simon Carr, British third seed Aidan McHugh, Dalibor Svrcina of Czech Republic, Italy’s Lorenzo Bocchi and Hungarian Zsombor Velcz are the seven foreigners who have reached the quarter-finals.

Niki K Poonacha, the 2019 National Champion of India, outplayed the Swede Filip Bergevi 6-4, 6-4, who had knocked out the number one seed Sidharth Rawat yesterday and made it to the last eight as the only Indian.

India’s Nitin Kumar Sinha, who made it to the Main Draw as a lucky loser, put up a spirited fight against British third seed Aidan McHugh before bowing out 7-5, 6-7, 6-7 in a gruelling 4 hours and 9 minutes long tie.

Sinha fired seven aces in total during the hard-fought three-setter and had just three double faults whilst McHugh could only manage three aces and double-faulted six times but failed to convert both the tie-breaks.

Niki K Poonacha holds the Indian hopes for the singles title.

 

Better showing for India in doubles as three all-Indian pairs advance to semis

In the doubles, the day yielded contrasting results for Indians as three out of four semi-finals berth are booked by all-Indian pairs. Top seeds Arjun Kadhe and Saketh Myneni, fourth seeds Anirudh Chandrasekar and Niki K Poonacha and Manish Sureshkumar and Ranjeet Virali-Murugesan will be playing tomorrow to book their place in the doubles final. Czech-Hungarian duo of Dalibor Svrcina and Zsombor Velcz beat the British pairing of Jonathan Binding and Henry Patten 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 to make it to the semis.

The singles quarter-finals and doubles semi-finals are scheduled to be played at the RK Khanna Tennis Stadium, New Delhi tomorrow.
