India’s Sumit Nagal won back-to-back qualifying matches over the weekend at the Sardinia ATP 250 event to enter the main draw of Forte Village Sardegna Open 2020 in Italy.

With €271,345 on offer as prize money, Sardinia is one of four new ATP 250 events added to the 2020 provisional schedule, as tennis continues its return following suspension of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The highest ranked Indian male tennis player (129th) in the world, Nagal will play 74th ranked Serb Laslo Djere tomorrow in their Round of 32 clash.

Djere got the better of Nagal last week during their second round match at Parma Challenger event and defeated Nagal in a closely fought match, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

However, at the Sardinia event, Nagal has bounced back with couple of straight set wins in the qualifiers over Geoffrey Blancaneaux of France (world no. 276), 6-3, 6-3 and Slovakia’s Andrej Martin (ranked 100th), 6-4, 6-2.

The clay court tournament with a draw of 32 players in singles features Nagal as the only Indian in the field this week in Italy.
