India registers a comprehensive victory against the Danes in Davis Cup World Group I Play-Offs
The Indian team scripted a famous 4-0 win against Denmark today in their World Group I Play-Offs tie, even as Davis Cup action returned to the iconic Delhi Gymkhana Club in New Delhi after 49 years.
The Indians blanked their opponents in all the four rubbers which included straight-sets victories for both Ramkumar Ramanathan and Yuki Bhambri on Friday, 4th March 2022.
Ramanathan, playing Christian Sigsgaard in the first match of the tie, took only 59 minutes to close the match 6-3, 6-2.
Bhambri, on the other hand, got the better of Mikael Torpegaard 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 27 minutes.
Day one triumphs were followed by an epic come-from-behind win in the third rubber by India’s Doubles specialists, veteran Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan.
The experience of the Doubles pair came in handy with the duo saving three match points and winning the rubber in tie-breaker 6-7, 6-4, 7-6.
With India taking an unassailable lead in the first three rubbers, Ramkumar Ramanathan went down in the first set 5-7 but managed to close out the fourth rubber in three sets 5-7, 7-5, 10-7.
After winning this World Group I Play-Offs tie, India have now reserved their spot in the World Group I stage. Last year, after the loss to Finland in September 2021, India had slipped to the Play-Offs.
