India's Tennis Contingent Gears Up for Paris Olympics 2024

As the countdown to the Paris Olympics 2024 intensifies, India’s tennis prospects are shaping up with a blend of experience and youthful enthusiasm. The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has finalised its roster, highlighting a mix of seasoned campaigners and promising debutants set to grace the courts of Roland Garros.

The seasoned campaigner Rohan Bopanna will lead the charge in men’s doubles, marking his third consecutive Olympic appearance. Bopanna, ranked No. 4 in the world doubles rankings, secured India’s quota with authority, choosing N Sriram Balaji as his partner. Balaji ranked No. 67 globally, will make his Olympic debut, bringing a fresh perspective and eagerness to make his mark on the grand Olympic stage.

Reflecting on his Olympic journey, Bopanna reminisced about his debut at London 2012 and his partnership with Mahesh Bhupathi, which saw them reach the second round. Despite narrowly missing out on a medal with Sania Mirza at Rio 2016, Bopanna remains determined to add an Olympic accolade to his illustrious career.

Joining the doubles lineup is Sumit Nagal, whose entry into the men’s singles event marks his second consecutive Olympic appearance. Nagal, buoyed by recent successes including a pivotal victory at the Heilbronn Challenger, has broken into the top 80 of the ATP singles rankings. His journey from a standout performance at the 2020 Tokyo Games to solidifying his place among India’s top singles players underscores his growing stature in international tennis.

Nagal, the first Indian man in over three decades to defeat a seeded player in a Grand Slam, expressed his excitement, emphasizing the significance of representing India at Paris 2024. “The Olympics hold a special place in my heart,” he shared on social media, reflecting on his career milestones and setting ambitious goals for the upcoming games.

Adding to the team’s synergy, Balachandran Manikkath will serve as coach, bringing strategic insight and mentorship, while Rebecca Van Orshaegen joins as the team’s physiotherapist, ensuring peak physical conditioning throughout the tournament.

The stage is set for India’s tennis stars to shine in Paris, with Bopanna, Balaji, and Nagal poised to demonstrate their skill, resilience, and competitive spirit on the global stage. As the nation rallies behind its athletes, anticipation builds for memorable performances and potentially historic achievements in both singles and doubles events.
