Zeel Desai stopped the dream run of Sandeepti Singh Rao in the final to justify the crown
Zeel Desai claimed a hard-fought victory in the ITF $15,000 Women’s tennis tournament, held at the Joygaon tennis academy in Jhajjar.
After dropping the first set to qualifier Sandeepti Singh Rao, Desai surged back to take the match 1-6 6-1 6-4. Singh Rao had an impressive run in the tournament, taking down the top seed Diana Marcinkevica in round two and the 3rd seed Tamara Curovic in the semi-final, before meeting Desai in the decider.
On the other hand, Desai came into the final having beaten some of the excellent players in earlier rounds including her doubles partner and countrymate Vaidehi Chaudhari in the semis. she was on a roll and was determined to put in a good performance to win the title.
The final match started off with Singh Rao winning the first set 1-6, Desai did manage to put up a better fight in the second set to make it one-all in the match. in the third set, Desai was able to stay on top and took the set 6-4 to be able to close out the match and clinch the title. It was the second singles title in the professional circuit for the 23-year-old Zeel, who had won her first title in 2017 in Gwalior.
The tournament saw some top performances from the women’s tennis circuit, with Singh Rao’s fascinating run to the final and Desai’s comeback being the highlights. The tournament, being held at the Joygaon tennis academy, was a success, with the quality of tennis being exceptional throughout the tournament. The success of Desai and Singh Rao was a testament to the talent of the players involved
