The Indian team showcased stellar performances throughout the WJT U14Boys Asia Oceania Qualifying in Kuching, Malaysia, securing impressive victories against formidable opponents such as China, Australia, and South Korea to advance to the final. Led by standout players Tavish Pahwa, a semi-finalist at the Orange Bowl, and Eddie Here, a quarterfinalist, the team exhibited exceptional skill and determination on the court.
In the semi-finals, Team India displayed their dominance by defeating Korea 2-0. Tavish Pahwa secured a strong start by defeating Jang Junseo, while Hruthik Katakam was leading against Kim Dongjae before the Korean player retired. This victory propelled India into the title clash against Japan, with the team’s eyes set on clinching the championship.
Despite their valiant efforts, India faced a tough challenge in the final against Japan. Hruthik Katakam fought hard in the singles match, but Takahiro Kawaguchi’s resilience secured a 2-0 victory for Japan, who had previously defeated India in the league stage as well. Nevertheless, India’s performance throughout the tournament earned them a well- deserved spot in the World Group competition to be held in Prostejov, Czech Republic, from August 5-10, 2024.
The journey to the final saw Team India delivering commendable performances. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Australia 2-0, with both Tavish Pahwa and Hruthik Katakam showcasing their skills on the court. Despite a loss to Japan in the league stage, Team India rebounded with victories against China and Singapore, displaying their resilience and determination to succeed.
Team India, comprising Tavish Pahwa, Hruthik Katakam, and Fazal Ali Meer under the guidance of Coach Irfan Ahmed, demonstrated remarkable teamwork and tenacity throughout the tournament. While falling short in the final, their achievements highlight the bright future of Indian tennis and serve as a testament to the talent and dedication of the young players. As they prepare for future competitions, Team India aims to build on their success and continue to make strides on the international stage.
