The Indo-Aussie pair, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden went down to the 3rd seed Croatian – American pair of Ivan Dodig/Austin Krajicek in the doubles final after an epic encounter that ended in a super tie-breaker 6-7(5) 6-2 (10-12) at the ATP 500 ABN AMRO Open in the Netherlands.
Dodig and Krajicek faced a championship point at 9/10 in the Match Tie-break but reeled off three straight points to clinch their fourth ATP Tour title as a team. Earlier, they had also rallied from 3-5 in the opening set, which featured six service breaks.
Bopanna and Ebden converted five of eight break points in the final but were left to rue missed chances at key moments in the one-hour, 42-minute encounter. The Indian[1]Australian pair let slip two set points in the 10th game of the first set before also missing their chance to clinch victory in the Match Tie-break.
After the Australian Open 2023 where Rohan finished as mixed doubles runner with compatriot Sania Mirza, the veteran Indian player was seen in a consolidated action in the ATP 500 ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where along with his doubles partner Matthew Ebden, he delivered some stellar performances to reach the doubles final. The journey to the final was not easy for the pair as they had to face some tough opponents along the way. Nevertheless, they managed to come out on top in every match. In the first round, they defeated the Polish pair of Hugo Nys/Jan Zielinski in straight sets. This was followed by a victory over the 4th seed pair in the quarterfinals. In the semis, they played an extraordinary game to overpower the German pair of Kevin Krawietz/Tim Puetz in straight sets 6-4 6-4. Finally, in the finals, they lost to the 3rd seed pair of Ivan Dodig/Austin Krajicek after an epic encounter that ended in a super tiebreaker 6-7(5) 6-2 (12-10).
