The Indo-Canadian duo of Rohan Bopanna (World rank 37) and Denis Shapovalov (45) have kicked off this year’s US Open campaign with an emphatic win over an all American pairing of Ernesto Escobedo and Noah Rubin on Friday.

In a rain-interrupted first-round match which had to be played over two days, Bopanna and Shapovalov were both on song as they cruised past their opponents in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

In yet another first for Indian Tennis, Sania Mirza has brought home India’s first-ever Fed Cup Heart Award in Asia/Oceania category by winning a whopping 10,000 plus votes out of the total 16,985 votes cast for this year’s three regional Group I nominees.

The Fed Cup Heart Award winners were determined by online voting by fans which went on for a week starting from 1 May to 8 May, 2020.
