Amit Beniwal beats top seed Chandril Sood in ATT Tennis
Amit Beniwal knocked out top seed Chandril Sood 6-3, 6-1 in the first round of the Col. KK Uppal memorial $3,000 Asian men’s tennis tournament at the VAN Sports Club, Baliawas, on Wednesday.
On a day when there were as many as six players who did not finish their match and conceded after playing one set or a little more, second seed Vijayant Malik retired when he was handshaking distance away from defeat.
Vimalraj Jayachandran led 7-5, 5-3 when Vijayant conceded. Vimalraj will play Vilasier Khate in the pre-quarterfinals.
Amit Beniwal will face Lakshya Gupta, who endured a long-drawn battle against Shubham Malhotra and won 6-1, 6-7(8), 7-5.
Shashank Theertha overcame the loss of the first set in the tie-break to beat eighth seed Yugal Bansal as the latter retired early in the third set.
Twin brother of Chandril Sood, Lakshit Sood cruised into the second round with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Aakash Ahlawat.
