Prajnesh ends runner-up to Elias Ymer in the final of the KPIT $50,000 Challenger
The fine run of Prajnesh Gunneswaran over a fortnight was brought to an end by third seed Elias Ymer of Sweden as he recorded a 6-2, 7-5 victory over the country’s No.1 player in the final of the KPIT $50,000 Challenger tennis tournament in Pune on Saturday.
Prajnesh, who won the $150,000 Challenger in Bengalur last week, and still left with unfinished business for the season, as he would be competing in the Australian Open wild card play-off in China next week, was perhaps physically drained to play any better than what he did.
The Swede won his second title that fetched him 80 ATP points and $7,200. Prajnesh pocketed 55 points and $4,053.
There was a lot of cheer for the home fans, as Vijay Sundar Prashanth and Ramkumar Ramanathan won the doubles title beating the Taipei pair of Cheng-Peng Hsieh and Tsung-Hua Yang 10-7 in the super tie-break.
It was another fruitful week for Indian tennis.
The results (finals):
Singles: Elias Ymer (Swe) bt Prajnesh Gunneswaran 6-2, 7-5.
Doubles: Vijay Sundar Prashanth & Ramkumar Ramanathan bt Cheng-Peng Hsieh & Tsung-Hua Yang (Tpe) 7-6(3), 6-7(5), 10-7.
