Chirag duhan and udit gogoi win doubles title in road to wimbledon finals
Udit Gogoi hit an ace on the third matchpoint to clinch the boys doubles title in partnership with Chirag Duhan in the Road to Wimbledon UK under-14 tennis championship on the grass courts of Wimbledon on Saturday.
Udit and Chirag tamed Billy Blaydes and Jonah Gethin 6-3, 0-6, 10-5 in the final. After losing the second set, the Indian pair did very well to assert itself in the super tie-break, in which the pair took a 9-3 lead before Udit closed it out in style.
Sanjana Sirimalla was off colour in the girls final and thus managed to win three games against Eva Shaw.
‘’Excellent performance by Chirag and Udit to win the boys doubles title to finish the week strongly. They put their names in the Wimbledon history books! Commendable effort by Sanjana to make the girls singles final in a tough field’’, said coach Ashutosh Singh, making it a point to mention the composure with which the players handled the challenges of playing on grass, indoor hard and carpet courts ,in different weather conditions.
''I am very happy that everyone had a good run. Am optimisticthat this exposure will motivate them to work harder in their pursuit of becoming better tennis players'', Ashutosh said.
Overall, it was a good experience for the Indian team, and an improved performance in recent times, after Sacchitt Sharma and Mahak Jain had won the boys and girls singles titles in 2015.
Siddhant Banthia had won the singles title and the doubles title with Adil Kalyanpur when India first participated in the event four years ago.
