Jeevan nedunchezhiyan in doubles semifinals in chengdu ATP

Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, in partnership with Austin Krajicek of the US, beat the alternate entrants Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium and Prajnesh Gunneswaran 6-3, 7-5 to make the doubles semifinals of the ATP tennis tournament in Chengdu, China, on Thursday.

In the semifinals, Jeevan and partner will play Guido Pella of Argentina and Joao Sousa of Portugal, who had beaten Sriram Balaji and Rohan Bopanna in the quarterfinals.

In the ATP event in Shenzhen, Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina proved too strong, as he beat qualifier Ramkumar Ramanathan 6-4, 6-2. Damir converted three of five breakpoints to cruise, and saved all the 10 breakpoints that he faced.

Ramkumar collected 32 ATP points, including 12 for qualification, and $12,535.

In the $60,000 ITF women’s event in Australia, Rutuja Bhosale in partnership with Hiroko Kuwata of Japan set up a title clash against Kimberly Birrell of Australia and Katy Dunne of Britain.

In the ITF men’s Futures in Thailand, Karunuday Singh beat the third seed in singles quarterfinals, and made the doubles final with Francis Casey Alcantara of Philippines.

Prithvi Sekhar bounced back from a bad start to beat Deaflympics silver medallist Andres Vazquez 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 as India secured the seventh place with a 2-1 victory over Ecuador in the Deaf Tennis World Championship in Antalya, Turkey, on Thursday.

After DH Prashanth gave a flying start by outplaying Jean Carlos Santana 6-0, 6-1, Prithvi stumbled to a bad start before settling into his fighting best.

‘’Despite losing the first set, I played confident. My backhand down the line was working fine, and I went for volleys too. I was serving good, and was willing to rally to earn the points’’, said Prithvi, quite happy to have played a strong role.

''This is the first time we are playing this team championship. Next time we will prepare better and try to be in the top-4'', said Prithvi.

The Indian women, however, were beaten by host Turkey 3-0 and placed eighth.
