Indian girls beat Sri Lanka, place 11th
Sanjana Sirimalla and Bhakti Shah won their singles matches, albeit in contrasting style, in helping India beat Sri Lanka 2-0 in the match for the 11th place in the Asia Oceania Junior Fed Cup under-16 girls tennis tournament which concluded in Bangkok on Saturday.
Sanjana dropped two games in outplaying Oneli Perera in the first singles. Bhakti Shah won 10-7 in the super tie-break to beat Neyara Weerawanse.
Host Thailand had a lot to cheer as it beat Chinese Taipei 2-1 for the title. China beat Korea 2-1 for the third place. All the four teams qualified for the World Group competition to be staged later in the season in Europe.
The results (11th place) India bt Sri Lanka 2-0 (Sanjana Sirimalla bt Oneli Perera 6-2, 6-0; Bhakti Shah bt Neyara Weerawanse 3-6, 6-4, [10-7]).
