Bopanna and Shapovalov book semis berth at ATP 500 ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament
Indo-Canadian duo beat 2015 Champions Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau
India’s Rohan Bopanna and Canada’s Denis Shapovalov secured a thrilling win over fourth seeds Jean-Juien Rojer (NED) and Horia Tecau (ROU) 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 and sealed their semi-finals spot at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament at Rotterdam, Netherlands on Thursday.
Ranked 41st in the ATP Doubles ranking, Rohan Bopanna and Denis Shapovalov (52nd) faced a stiff challenge, which lasted 74 minutes, from their opponents who are both ranked inside World Top 20 in doubles, Rojer (18th) and Tecau (17th).
Bopanna and Shapovalov will aim to reach another ATP Tour final as they take on the winners of the quarter-final tie between Henri Kontinen (FIN) and Jan-Lennard Struff (GER) and the all British pair Jamie Murray and Ken Skupski.
Bopanna and Shapovalov had made their maiden ATP Tour final at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart in June 2019.
Hailing from Bengaluru, Rohan Bopanna has already pocketed an ATP Tour event this year in January when he, along with Wesley Koolhof from Netherlands, triumphed the first ATP Tour trophy of the decade - Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2020.
39-year-old Rohan Bopanna has won a Mixed-Doubles Grand Slam (2017 French Open with Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski), 19 Doubles ATP Tour titles and an Asian Games doubles Gold medal with Divij Sharan in his 18 year long career.
