Rutuja Bhosale beats Ankita Raina in first round of $25,000 ITF women’s tennis in Pune

Former Asian junior champion Rutuja Bhosale stressed her fighting game as she beat third seed Ankita Raina, by converting her eighth matchpoint, in the first round of the NECC-Deccan $25,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament in Pune on Tuesday.

It was the first victory in four meetings for the 21-year-old Rutuja over the 24-year-old Ankita, who had made the quarterfinals of the $125,000 WTA event in Mumbai and had won the titles in the Petroleum meet in Guwahati last week.

After squandering the first set from being ahead 3-1, Ankita survived five matchpoints from 4-5 in the second set to force the decider. In the third set, it was Rutuja who called the shots by racing to a 5-1 lead even though she missed two more matchpoints in the seventh game.

Eventually, Ankita failed to capitalise on three breakpoints in the eighth game when Rutuja was serving at 0-40, and brought the curtains down on her challenge in the gripping contest that lasted two hours and 27 minutes.

Rutuja converted eight of 19 breakpoints and saved eight of 12 breakpoints that she faced.

In the pre-quarterfinals, Rutuja will play qualifier Kaja Juvan of Slovenia.
