Abhaya Vemuri fights past Prabha Arun kumar
Abhaya Vemuri had to fight her way past Prabha Arunkumar 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-1 in a group-D league match of the Road to Wimbledon under-14 girls tennis tournament on the grass courts of the Gymkhana Club on Wednesday.
Abhaya saved a set point to pocket the first set and tightened her stranglehold subsequently in the third set.
The second victory ensured a quarterfinal berth for Abhaya along with Suhitha Maruri who also won her first two matches in the group.
Top seed Pari Singh and Anjali Rathi set up an interesting duel for the group ‘A’ honours by winning their second matches. Veda Raju Prapurna and Kundana Sri Bandaru also ensured their quarterfinal entries in groups ‘B’ and ‘C’ with their second wins.
Apurva Vemuri strengthened her chances for a berth in the knock-out with a brisk 6-1, 6-1 victory over Chahana Budhbhatti in group ‘B’.
Suryanshi Tanwar beat Amishi Shukla to jump into the race for qualification from group ‘D’, but will face Kundana who has dropped only two games in all in her two matches so far. Amishi will play Lakshmi Gowda who has not recorded a win yet.
Meanwhile, in the boys event in Chandigarh on the grass courts of Chandigarh Club, only Yuvan Nandal managed to finish his match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Omaansh Choudhary Saharia, while the rest of the matches remained incomplete owing to rain.
It will be a packed schedule over the next two days, to decide the two boys and two girls who will make it to Wimbledon for the UK under-14 championship to be played in August.
